Week 3 Term 3

Stuff you should know that we went over today:

Stylisation. You all should have chosen one of these four styles as your MAIN style to know

1) Kowhaiwhai (printmaking)
2) Art Nouveau (printmaking)
3) Manga (painting)
4) Pasifika (painting)

Term three week one

Choices:

This first week is about getting to know 4 different movements of Art from a visual point of view. That means, you look at them and you can see what of the four movements of art they belong to.

We are also wanting to see some drawing from you, with an emphasis on looking after your page and setting it out nicely.

Eventually, you are going to decide which of these 4 movements of Art you will use as a focus. each one comes with a contrasting movement that you will then be directed to use (one choice, one given).

Why we are making art? To demonstrate your understanding of at least one of the school values - Commitment, Achievement, Resilience, Respect.

Keep this in your mind for week 2 as well. Which school value are you going to focus on?

Thumbnail Sketches

Are quick sketches where you consider how to create your composition.

Your composition should be reflecting your concept, otherwise there is not much point! Who writes a song about love and never talks about it?

You should all have an A3 page, titled "Thumbnail Sketches". Makes it easier to find next time...

On it, that branch of your brain storm that defines your concept. Up the top, not dominating too much space would be good.

A logical next step is to make sure you have some imagery that is relevant to your concept, keeping in mind Pasifika and Manga should be clearly present.

For me: - Minnie's heels, bow, etc... maybe some images of Jimmy Choo shoes as well. It would be sensible for me to use google image to collect these, as it is accessible. That doesn't mean I google art work about Minnie and Mickey and gender roles. It means I start my own source imagery collection.

Collecting these images up and making them into a google draw resource is where I will take this next... (today's task)

How to use google draw:

1) Watch the video

2) Set up your own google draw for term four narrative painting

3) Google search images based on your concept using 'search tools' - 'usage rights' - labelled for re-use

Collect at least 6 images you can draw from later on.

Defining your narrative

Everything had a meaning or a reason behind it.

The task was to create a brainstorm on a topic of your own choosing. Absolutely anything. At least 5 words should have branched off your main brainstorm word:

 this is my example one on the board on Mickey Mouse. Five things that instantly came to mind.

Choose at least one of these things to extend your ideas:

 I chose 'Minnie' and then from there it was 'heels', 'female', and 'cutesy' that came to mind.

If I was using this as an overall concept, it is the male and female roles Disney portrays. Everyone should have been to this point by the end of the lesson. Everyone will have a different concept.

Composition

Last week we covered some compositional elements of both Manga and Fatu Feu'u.

The things you were asked to notice/do were:

• Completing a quick 'thumbnail sketch' of each piece (rough, proportional, but not detailed)
• Defining the difference between realistic, abstract, symbolic, surreal in classifying these art works.
• Identifying the background, middle ground and foreground use of space - can you see how this is visually balanced?
• Understanding the narrative value of each piece with 4 bullet points that illustrated this on your page

Both Art forms are "Narrative' in style - they have a story.

This work should have covered an A3 page.

End of term three

Make sure you have finished all of your printmaking work before moving on with the next unit of work...

Manga versus Pasifika

Both are Narrative.

Both are reliant on the cultural and social circumstances of where they are located to fully make sense.

Go back to the google site for year 9 and have a look at the resources on the term four -  file cabinet page. You are working to develop visual skills in drawing from both a Manga style and a Pasifika pattern style.

Water Colour Painting

Finish 3 pieces of water colour painting that use

- 3 or more colours

- Demonstrate blending two or more colours together

- Layer two or more colours over each other

- 'Bleed' one colour into another for effect

- Show something experimental in how you paint 

Finish 1 piece of water colour painting of Manga

- That demonstrates; using warmer, bold and defined colours in the foreground and cooler, faded and less defined colours in the background. You may want to have a think about this with a class mate first.

Research drawing and research for Manga

We have pretty much finished up with drawing for Manga, but a lot of you still have some research work to complete your lovely pages off with. Here are the notes from the whiteboard.  And below them are the photos I took of some of your work from last Friday. Looking pretty good 9hl :-)

Manga and Pasifika - Narrative in Art Making

Welcome to week two of term two. 

We are going to be working towards a painting this term.

In doing this, we are going to study the tradition and skills involved in Manga (or Anime) and Pasifika pattern forms.

We are starting with research drawing which you have done in term one as well.
