Mark making

Putting your progress so far together as a potential art work;
  • term two selfie, how can you incorporate this,
  • term two understanding of German Expressionism and woodcut technique, how can you best use this,
  • as well as your own personal expression?
It is really important that you process your selfie as a graphic, black and white drawing that focusses on translating tone into MARK MAKING and texture, not shading. That might mean you interpret some areas a little differently to how they appear, or that you change tones into marks, or simplify them. It might mean you try one way of doing things and it does not work. That means try another way. Don't just quit. You also should be focussing on making this drawing NOT pretty. It is meant to be you considering how over-the-top and self-obsessed the idea of the selfie is. Make it ugly, make it creepy, make it a bit angsty, but let's not glorify it.

From here, you should be moving onto our Pinterest site for German Expressionism and beginning some thumbnail sketches. We can go over how to manage these more carefully in class.

Thumbnail Sketches

Are quick sketches where you consider how to create your composition.

Your composition should be reflecting your concept, otherwise there is not much point! Who writes a song about love and never talks about it?

You should all have an A3 page, titled "Thumbnail Sketches". Makes it easier to find next time...

On it, that branch of your brain storm that defines your concept. Up the top, not dominating too much space would be good.

A logical next step is to make sure you have some imagery that is relevant to your concept, keeping in mind Pasifika and Manga should be clearly present.

For me: - Minnie's heels, bow, etc... maybe some images of Jimmy Choo shoes as well. It would be sensible for me to use google image to collect these, as it is accessible. That doesn't mean I google art work about Minnie and Mickey and gender roles. It means I start my own source imagery collection.

Collecting these images up and making them into a google draw resource is where I will take this next... (today's task)

How to use google draw:

1) Watch the video
2) Set up your own google draw for term four narrative painting
3) Google search images based on your concept using 'search tools' - 'usage rights' - labelled for re-use

Collect at least 6 images you can draw from later on.

More instructions to come...

9 BR recap

Stylisation

  • Art Nouveau

  • Kowhaiwhai

  • Beatriz Milhazes

You should have a beautiful research page done and in your folders that I can check off.

There are things you should be noticing about both art movements and the artist chosen;

  • forms are simplified, curves are amplified.
  • geometry, pattern and repetition all strongly feature in all 3
  • there is no real use of three-dimensional space in any of these
Specific to each; Kowhaiwhai
- regulated circular curves
- principles of mathematics are employed exactlingly; rotation, scale, reflection, repetition, pattern
- the pattern, scale and proximity of the forms help to convey a story, whakapapa, or even emotion

Specific to Art Nouveau
- dominant tell-tale form is called a whiplash
- all derived from plant forms
- detail is more important than kowhaiwhai

Specific to Beatriz Milhazes
- patterns and forms are over-layed
- intersecting forms are a strong feature
- colour and layers of colour/texture are a feature
- composition is tightly balanced and intense

Welcome to Art 9 Br

Welcome back, lovely class. Today you need: a chrome book, a pencil and an A3 sheet of paper.

You will be researching stuff online first, please only use the links given. Otherwise you might just get confused.

When you come to Pinterest, you will need to make an account. Use your school email and password for this so you don't forget it and follow the Art department.

I have uploaded a slide presentation into your Art folder on google drive. You need to open this.

This work can be done in pairs or individually up until slide 12. If you work in pairs make sure you share the one slide show with the other person.

At slide 12, you need to work on your own on a research page on paper with a pencil.

Good luck. If you have a blog for another subject, use it to upload your work from today and use labels to clarify that it is Art :-)

White board research notes for you written component; handwritten onto your research pages please, not copied and pasted onto a doc. Please make sure you write down the websites you used as well, on your page.

Manga and Pasifika - Narrative in Art Making

Welcome to week two of term two.

We are going to be working towards a painting this term.

In doing this, we are going to study the tradition and skills involved in Manga (or Anime) and Pasifika pattern forms.

We are starting with research drawing which you have done in term one as well.

Do you remember what makes good research drawing?
