Stylisation in Art

Stylisation - means to build rules for a certain look, that becomes a style.

It is all around you; think for a moment about how you categorise people and how
they look. A man walks down the street wearing skinny black jeans, some chains
hanging down, a trench coat that looks second hand, purple hair and pale makeup...
I could go on, What style are you labelling that in your head? What are the rules?
You would use your interpretation of those rules to recreate the style? If you wanted to!

What are the rules?
How do you replicate it? We are about to discuss this in class...

Above is a Padlet. You may have used one before. As we discuss this, write your ideas
down here too. Use a double-tap of the mouse pad anywhere on the padlet to get started.

Introduction to 8MT

This was my first time teaching in the Junior College classrooms. Well-appointed and air conditioned, definite plus. 8MT are my first year 8 class altogether, so they get to go here first.

8MT are a diverse class with a good mix of boys and girls in the class. We are teaching from their home room space and seem to have the luxury of spreading out next door to where the sink is... that would be useful as the year progresses. There are some very cool characters in this class and really good work was produced on day one. The photos below are of students in progress today. Deliberately, there are no faces of students shown.

This class has Art once a week, period four on a Wednesday (12pm - 1pm).

The focus of today was to get started as Art students and for us to get to know each other and routines. all students have begun with a name page that details what they are interested in and things that matter to them. There will be a chance to complete these next week too, but we will be starting with looking at our first topic - Impressionism.

Our overall theme in Art this year is revolution and rebellion; how these concepts are demonstrated in Art and how Art has at times, help make change happen. The course outline is back on the google site under the Year 7 and 8 page.

All students are supplied an Art pack for the year costing $12 but worth considerably more, so that everyone has the same gear, are on an even playing field and can complete the course equitably. Because students will own the materials, they are able to take their learning home. We appreciate support in paying Art fees.

Term One will be all about painting. I look forward to posting some more images up of Art work from the other year 8 classes and documenting our progress in Art this year.

Welcome to the First Term

Welcome 9HL, we have had one successful class so far and because of Waitangi Day Holiday on Monday, I won't be seeing you again until next Friday. Today we have distributed the Art packs. This is materials you will use over the course of your two terms in Art. It is a part of the fee we charge you for art of $20.00. Please make sure you pay your fees as this is the only way we can afford to run good programmes here and we really do! If there are any questions, please get your parents to call me here at school or come in and see me. Remember for next time:

Tikanga; our protocol, way of doing and being here in the Art room and what it looks like for us.

We will be working with Stylisation as your starting point next lesson, with hopefully as many of you on chromebooks as possible so that we can all access the same information.

Pinterest Page

Please don't forget:
I did this a wee while ago. It is a collection of potential Artist models that Students could investigate further in their work. It has been a wee bit forgotten about, so I am hoping that posting its address here will remind students to check in with it every now and then.

Neglected blog...

Year 13 - Folios are due October 29th 4pm.

Our students have been really busy. Here is a run down of what they have been up to lately;

Brooke's work lately has been examining careful and subtle ways of depersonalising a subject now using John Stezaker. This leads really well on from Duane Michels.

While Samuel's most recent post is about David Hockney, the physical work he has been making is yet to explore this. I do like the images of his little brother, and panel one has worked very well so far. There is still significant editing to do over the next 3 and half weeks.

Dayna has worked on sequencing panels one and two very carefully and her final result is currently posted. Reflection and critique is required to complete panel 3. Possibly utilising her latest shoot of Estelle.

'Ailine is having to restructure her first panel, as even though it works really well, one of her models is just not reliable enough. Fortunately, she does a lot of work in general, so she has a lot of work she can go back to in order to re-edit and restructure. This is one of the pitfalls of using models when you are a high school student! Sometimes they are unreliable.

Danielle is using David Carson as a way of extending her ideas in panel three - pixelation and missing the subject from the typical focal points you would expect to focus on will be something she needs to work on further.

Hayley has left her blog for a little while, but I know she will very SOON update this and add her second panel to the beautiful collection of photos she already has...

Level three students should by now have sent their file links to me for printing for panels 1 and 2. Ideally we would want to print panel 3 next week. Sticking photos down is a tiresome and time consuming job, now would be a good time to find a friend who wants to help!

Week Seven Term One 2014

So last week, interrupted by Athletics day and some of the stormiest weather we have had for a very long time; how much have we achieved?

Above, the students wrote themselves a plan for the week. They then had to stick to it, knowing I would blog about it and also direct our community to the blog actively as a way of keeping in touch with what is happening in our class. Tomorrow, all students are going to be asked to update their blogs to accurately reflect their progress so far, but the following notes are what I have particularly noticed over the past week.

Danielle, Dayna, Samuel, and Brooke have all planned their time well and used it well. Danielle has been experimenting with some nice ideas for managing movement and It has been really nice to see these 4 work together in sussing out how different techniques can work in achieving her desired effect. Really nice collegial and supportive environment.

Hayley Smith has a clearer direction for how to potentially handle this idea of childhood memories without necessarily just arranging still life material to do it, and I love the Art influences she is looking at too. These will be up on her blog with some test shots hopefully this week (when I tell her to get it done, because I already wrote about it!). These are interesting Artist choices and there is potentially a very clear and clever way forward here.

There is a loophole with our Year 13 students; 'Ailine Kei does her Photography course out of line and is missing out on the fun of me harrassing our class into writing their plans up so, next week photography is period 5 on a Monday, but her class is period 4. We will start an hour earlier in writing up the plan for the week.

With the Year 12 students, things have moved slower. These students are still very new to Photography and blogging about their progress. I imagine it will take a bit of time to get into a regular routine of doing this.
stand outs however, are Natasha, who is already shooting ideas and thinking things through within class and Estelle, who is making good progress with learning how to use the camera. Jamie and Ellery are developing their concepts slowly; Henry Hargreaves and his body of work looking at last meals of death row inmates is a source of inspiration for Ellery and the Starn brothers is a good start for Jamie. There are two students whose names are conspicuously absent, and that is because they too are absent enough, that progress is being hindered.

Again the same issue is arising with students working out of line; Jacob, Bay and Vangie are somewhat disadvantaged by their not being included here, but their class is period 3 on the Monday, so I guess we start the planning another hour earlier than 'Ailine!

Next Steps

So all students in Year 12 have seen folios from previous years, have been given a good amount of time to think through their own concept and have browsed images by several artists online and in books. Students have also had some time getting to used to the camera and shooting. Clearer decisions need to be made about what concept looks like.

Natasha Muston has made a genuinely good start at getting this going and has taken her first shoot and posted it online. The rest of our Year 12 students need to look at this and consider this.

Last year's blogs also hold a lot of good information and you can see the flow of ideas in these.

From this week, students will be required to start planning their time in class for the week and then following through on it.  For example from 2013. This plan will be posted online and this year, each week I will make comment on how successful it was in my eyes. As this address is to be advertised to the parents of the students in this class, that is going to make it really accessible for parents/whanau to see where students are at in this subject.

Year 13 Research is extremely strong this year and the blogs are a good demonstration of this. I am really pleased with Brooke Henry's definition of Cinematography and Daneille Ward's definition of Urban Environment in particular. These are really well done and ideas are flowing well.

Hornby High School Photography 2014

Hi there! The expectation if you are doing photography at Hornby High School this year, is that you set up your own blog. This will pretty much replace your work book. Last year, the NZQA moderators were more than happy to assess our book work online through the students blogs. This will save you a lot of time and means that communicating and feedback will be much easier. The first week of school, once we have the moodle stuff sorted, will be getting yourselves online with a blog too.

There are things you will need to think carefully about with your blog. What you post will be there forever.

Commitment, Achievement, Resilience, Respect

The School Values apply to how you express yourselves digitally also. You need to care about being good digital citizens. Every post you make, on ALL forms of digital media is traceable (includes facebook). It will reflect on you in time to come. It is NOT like the spoken word that, unrecorded could be forgotten. Your digital shadow is something that can linger for a long time.

Commitment: Be learning ready online too, prepared, positive and to the point.
It is your responsibility to act positively. In doing that, you will encourage others to do the same.
- Consider the intention of your comments that are digitally created. They should be always thought through before you make them. What is your point? Is it learning focused, productive, meaningful? Are you going to make your life better? The lives of others better? You are now responsible for the health and well-being of others, when you include them in posts and comments. How much of this responsibility do you want to hold, if you are not being positive?
Achievement Be the best that you can be online too.
Aiming high with your intentions and outcomes online is just as important as anywhere else in your life. Except that online, there is a permanent memory of your intentions and outcomes. Again you become responsible for the health and well-being of others through online comments. You want to have a digital legacy that shows the world what a great person you are.
Resilience - have the confidence to try; connect with others on a similar journey.
- Putting yourself out there digitally IS scary and it is open to the world. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have a go. 95% of what is online is uploaded by everyday people, who are not attached to a corporation of any kind. A lot is misinformation. If you are using these tools appropriately, you are expressing your own learning journey and potentially inspiring others to do the same. Educate yourself and connect with others doing the same things.
Respect – people, places, property, beliefs, access, welfare, security

Other people’s websites are their PROPERTY. They may not have a physical nature, but you cannot rip them off. Other people will express views online that you may not agree with. It is not your place as a student to begin a full-scale online war with that person that becomes personal. Move on. Take care with your security settings and ensure they are appropriate. It is not a fun game to deliberately set about seeing if you can deceive and undermine the security of others online. All you are doing is undermining your own core values of being a good person. It is a serious legal breach to do this and can be followed up on.

End of the Year 2013

So our moderation for internal book work has been returned and can be collected whenever you want, if you are in year 12 Photography.

NZQA gave us positive feedback about using blogs for documenting your working process and have said that our students showed a high level of engagement and explored your own cultural mileau (identity/place/sense of belonging) really well. They also said that we only have to send in a list of url's next time as there is sufficient evidence presented on the blogs to show learning. This is amazingly good feedback to get from an unknown moderator!

For 2014, we are going to continue on and expand the blogging. Year 12 and 13 Photography will use them, as will year 12 and 13 Design. Our first few lessons in term one will be sorting out your blog names and linking them up to the teacher blogs. I think its a good idea to start new blogs for those who did them this year and there will be new teacher blogs as well; one for Design and one for Photography. If you have any thoughts on that, please put a comment up. I am happy to change my mind if there is a good reason.

I will put up the links to the new blogs once I have made them some time in the holidays. The links will be on the Art dept facebook page and will be accessible from moodle next year too. (whats Moodle?... you'll find out)

Have a fantastic holiday, see you next year

End of Term Three

Deadlines for folios are as follows:

Level 1 (1.3) is due 18th October at 4pm
Level 2 (2.4 Paint, Design and Photography) is due 25th October at 4pm
Level 3 (3.4 Paint, Print, Design, Photography) is due 1st November 4pm.

Art Exhibition of student work will be held on Monday 4th November from 5.30pm - 7pm. This is open to everyone. It may not include all of the level 2 folios due to NZQA timelines for moderation, but those not physically present will be represented in a data show.

I will be looking to select one piece of student work for the exhibition invite, which is most likely to be from within the year 12 group.

Pinterest board for photography

I did this a wee while ago. It is a collection of potential Artist models that Students could investigate further in their work. It has been a wee bit forgotten about, so I am hoping that posting its address here will remind students to check in with it every now and then. Fiona Pardington would be very helpful for Samuel for instance...
